– for a few days or a whole week
building the village I had a vision of
creating a place that I would like to visit
myself.
Thomas has built each cabin himself.
Including the ”so-called” Gökboet
(the Cuckoo’s Nest) – a timbered bridal
suite high up in the trees with a balcony
overlooking Lake Eldan. The cabins are
simple but tastefully equipped. Heating is
provided by the wood-fired cast iron stove
and for lighting you use good old-fashioned
paraffin lamps.
The guests who visit
Naturbyn get access
to Thomas’ great know-how in creating fun
and exciting adventures. There are plenty
of things to do here for families who want
an active holiday. Some only stay for a few
days, others move into Naturbyn and stay
for a whole week or longer.
– We have canoes for those who wish
to go canoeing and discovering the lovely
islands and beaches all around the lake on
their own, he says. We also have a boat for
fishing or exploring new places.
The outdoor kitchen
is centrally located
with a grill and cooking area over open
fire, sheltered from bad weather. In the
muurikka (large frying pan) it is easy to
make stir-fries or your own flat bread.
Those who do not want to eat out in the
open can set the table in Långhuset, which
also has a fireplace.
The thing that really stands out, though,
is most likely the plates. In Naturbyn, all
meals are served on handmade wooden
plates made from flat-sawn logs.
– When you’ve finished your meal you
simply put the plate in the fire, Thomas says
with a smile. No need to worry about the
washing up! The knives and forks are also
made out of wood and can be thrown on
the fire too.
