the architect Kjell Lund walked in for the
first time he burst out “I was commissioned
to build a protective glass shelter, but the
Holy Spirit built a cathedral”. The amazing
acoustics came as a big surprise and the
atmosphere made it feel just like a medieval
cathedral.
The building was reopened as an
ecumenical cathedral. All communions
have access to the new Hamardomen
Cathedral. It is a multi-purpose building
for concerts, ceremonies and Mass.
The museum consists of 65 antiquarian
buildings and holds a collection of ap-
proximately 50,000 objects. It also covers
large parts of the area where the medieval
village of Hamarkaupangen was situated.

With water splashing all around them,
children watch with fascination as the
rockets they have built themselves fly
towards the sky.
– Look! Mine can almost reach the sun,
a little girl calls out cheerfully.
The rockets are simple but ingenious
inventions that anyone can put together,
all in the spirit of Aukrust and Reodor
Felgen. A bit further inside the centre, we
hear a roar of laughter. In the Flåklypa
Room two friends have just had a go at
producing their own front page for the
paper Flåklypa Tidene (The Pinchcliffe
Times) – they have even managed to put
themselves in the paper.
The Aukrust Centre has a lot to offer all
members of the family, but before retur-
ning to the centre to see the permanent
exhibition ”Grande Artista! Kjell Aukrust
og Italia”, a break in Solan’s café is recom-
mended. The exhibition shows paintings
and drawings that the artist produced
during his trips to Italy. Kjell and his wife
Kari loved Italy and considered it their
second home.
