Autumn is approaching and the Värmland
landscape is looking more beautiful than ever.
The mosquitoes are gone and the tempe-
rature is perfect for those who enjoy being
active. In the moss, yellow chanterelles are
waiting to be picked, adding a little extra to
the evening’s al fresco dinner.
The
wilderness
awaits
Glaskogen Nature
Reserve,
Arvika
In the autumn, a
lot of people take
the opportunity to
pick berries and
mushrooms. We
have guests who
come here to pick
their yearly stash.
The hike takes you through the forest, along
the water and over the mountains. In Glas-
kogen Nature Reserve, you quickly become
one with the mysteries of the wilderness.
Glaskogen Nature Reserve was founded
in 1972 to promote an active outdoor life.
The reserve touches upon four municipalities
and covers 28,000 hectares. The houses in
the area are old and building of new houses
requires a special permit.
We have travelLed
to the west of
Värmland, left the main roads and followed
the signs for Lenungshammar. There are
woods, open fields, lakes, watercourses and
300 kilometres of marked hiking trails and
150 kilometres of canoe trails.
Vivi Appelqvist is the manager at
Glaskogen and has been working at the
information centre since 1990.
– I recommend coming to Glaskogen in
the spring and autumn, she says. At that time
of year there are plenty of available cabins
and wind shelters. Nature comes to life
day by day in the spring. Trees and flowers
bloom. It’s wonderful. In the autumn, a
lot of people take the opportunity to pick
berries and mushrooms. We have guests who
come here to pick their yearly stash.
–We’re here to provide guidance before
you set off, from the start of May until the
end of September. The service building with
kitchen, toilet and shower stays open all
year round.
Lenungshammar is a good
starting point,
regardless if you are heading out on a one
day excursion, a few days hike or a couple
of weeks canoeing. The staff are happy
to share their know-how about the area,
answer questions about Allemansrätten (the
Right of Public Access) and suggest good
places to spend the night.
– It can also be nice to stay at the
campsite on your first night or at the end of
your stay when you’re heading back from
the wilderness and into civilisation again,
in order to get a gentle transition, says Vivi.
We have a small shop here selling food and
sweets, bottled gas for the portable stove
