At half past seven in the evening we head off. Our
moose guide Susanne drives the minibus with eight
passengers and two cars follow behind as we set
out on the roads around Långberget, heading for the
borderland between Värmland and Dalarna. It is time
for a moose safari!
We’ve seen 18
moose at the most
during a moose
safari.
The moose safari starts with a theory
lesson. Susanne tells us all there is to know
about moose. Fully grown, the moose is
between 2.10 and 3.10 metres long, up to
2.30 metres high and very large animals
can weigh up to 600 kilos. The coat is thick
and consists of hollow hairs. The hoof has
four toes which the moose can spread out,
enabling it to easily cross a marsh where a
human would get stuck.
– We almost know for certain that the
moose sees the world in black and white,
says Susanne. Therefore, it’s actually a bit
strange that all hunters dress in green. It
would be much safer for them to dress in
orange instead so that they’re more visible
to each other during the hunt.
To begin with, Susanne drives at a
normal pace, but gradually she slows down
and edges along the road with her eyes
flickering from side to side. The German
couple next to us has switched on both
their still camera and their film camera,
ready for a moose to appear. Rocks and
uprooted trees fool the eye into seeing
moose everywhere we look.
– We’ve seen 18 moose at the most
during a moose safari, says Susanne. We’ve
also seen a white moose, but it was shot by
the hunting team nearby.
We almost give up hope of seeing
any moose at all, but then everything
happens at once. Within 13 minutes we
have had close encounters with six moose.
Excitement seeps into the bus. Everyone is
very pleased with the moose safari and the
evening ends with flatbread filled with thin
slices of moose meat, sitting in a tepee next
to the hotel.
