Lurö Archipelago is made up
of 250 islands of different
sizes and naturally divides
Lake Vänern into Lake
Värmlandssjön and Lake
Dalbosjön.
It is a paradise for those who enjoy boating
and the archipelago surroundings. Largely
undiscovered, you can always find your
own secluded place to stop. The largest
island spreads out just before Lake Vänern
opens up again in the south and is divided
into Husön, Källbergsön and Lurön.
At Stenstaka you will find Luringen
Hostel, which offers accommodation in
a boathouse, a lighthouse, a few smaller
cabins and aboard the sailing ship Gjöa.
On the opposite side of the island, you will
find the Stångudden Lighthouse, built in
1905. Today, the lighthouse is unattended
like many others, but is used as a summer
residence. The walk over will take you
through lush woods, across fields and along
rocky shores. Three enjoyable kilometres
where you can make new discoveries at
your own pace.
Several signs on Lurö show the way to
Klosterrruinen (the abbey ruin). However,
nowadays scientists agree that there is no
abbey ruin on Lurö.
– It was probably a church, says Hans
Olsson, archaeologist from the Värmland
Museum, who has been leading the excava-
tion on Lurö in the past weeks. We believe
that the construction of it began around
the 11th century. But we also suspect that it
was abandoned in the 14th century. During
our last excavation here in 2007, we found
graves which we’ve dated to the later part
of the 13th century, as well as remnants of
buildings.
