ourselves and have
been inspired by
the guesthouses
we have visited,
especially in Africa.
It sounds so simple and obvious when
Brenda Oudendijk explains the hotel’s
business. Guesthouse Eleven offers a
friendly atmosphere with a good chance of
meeting travellers from all over the world.
After a beautiful walk in the
surrounding countryside it feels good to
relax in the cosy lounge on Guesthouse
Elevens large outdoor terrace. On this
early summers day it makes sense to settle
under the roof in the shade, out of the sun.
Lunch smells Italian – grilled ciabatta with
chicken, pesto and a fresh green salad.
The couple Brenda Oudendijk and
Michel Muys moved to Sweden from
Holland with their two children Esther
and Rik in 2006. For two years they spent
all their time renovating the stately old
school by the beach at Lake Glafsfjord.
Today they offer 34 beds in ten tastefully
decorated guest rooms, all with private
shower and toilet. The former sports hall
has been transformed into a restaurant
and lounge.

Michel. Friendly places which invite
interaction between guests, where it is easy
to relax, have a beer or eat together.
Despite the extensive renovations and
rebuilding, the original charm of the
building remains. The wooden facade
painted red with typical white knots – this
is what small schools in the swedish
countryside looked like.
THEIR OWN EXPERIENCES
of travelling with
children means they have also created
great family rooms. Here everyone gets
their own bed for a good night’s sleep, and
the rooms are so big that it doesn’t feel
crowded even for a family of four or five.
Behind the hotel, the forest spreads out.
The surrounding landscape and the lake
are also the setting for all the activities on
offer at Guesthouse Eleven. All the options
are presented on their website and chances
are that everyone – the whole family – will
