more protected forest terrain. You will also
find two smaller ski resorts.
– I’m happy to help visitors find their
way about. Many have queries about where
they can go fishing, what kind of fish they
can catch, where they can put up their tents
and if there is a hotel nearby. You can find
all types of accommodation and standards
here. It all depends on the level of comfort
you’re after.
– In the autumn people like to explore the
forest and there are many nice areas around
here to forage for mushrooms and berries.
The municipality has
two national parks:
Femundsmarka and Gutulia. They vary
greatly in character. Femundsmarka is a
distinctive wilderness area and you can only
get there by foot. There are no roads into the
area. Gutulia is a much smaller area and is
mostly made up of primeval forest, known
for its tall, old spruces and pines.
In the northern parts, the second
largest natural lake in Norway spreads
out – Lake Femund. The distance between
Femundenden in the south and Nordvika
in the north measures 60 kilometres and
the lake is almost at the same altitude as
the tree line. Be careful if you are heading
out on Lake Femund on your own. The
weather can quickly turn a warm day in
early summer into a tough fight with snow
squalls and strong winds.
The passenger boat MS Fæmund II
operates on Lake Femund and takes you
further north, all the way to Sörvika and
Røros. The boat is one way of getting
deeper into Femundsmarka.
Femund Engerdal:
A mountain area, easily
accessible from both the
Oslo area and western
Sweden. Here you will
find Lake Femund, the
second largest natural
lake in Norway, as well
as the national parks
Femundsmarka and
Gutulia with its unique
forests. Elgå, on the
eastern side of lake
Femund is a good
starting point for tours
in the mountains or in
canoes exploring the
waterways.
