Kongsvinger Fortress:
Reopens with hotel,
restaurant, meeting and
conference facilities
during the spring of
2013. Unique historical
setting. 22 suites.
The main building was built in the
early 18th century and has recently been
renovated with a gentle hand to house both
exclusive meetings and family celebrations.
The property also includes a gallery,
wind shelters for outdoor excursions and
overnight stays in the wild, hunting cabins
and a log cabin with a fireplace and seating
for up to 50 people.
The manor has nine rooms and 17
beds. The meeting facilities and lounges
are spacious and still hold the charm and
personality that are so characteristic of this
type of manor house.
– The best way to safeguard something
special is to use it, says hotel manager Arnt
R Mikalsen, who is now opening the more
than 300-year-old fortress to conferences,
parties and special events.
Kongsvinger Fortress was founded by
King Christian V in 1682. The fortress
enjoyed its glory days somewhat later,
1808–1814. It also played a central role
in the defense against Sweden during the
disturbances in 1905 which led to the
dissolution of the union between the two
countries.
Wings
of history
The historic Kongsvinger
Fortress has been trans-
formed into one of the most
modern, unique places for
people to come together
in Norway, with a hotel,
restaurant, and meeting and
banquet halls.

Skansgården Manor:
Mansion dating from
the 18th century.
Spacious lounges,
meeting facilities
and banquet halls.
A total of nine rooms
and 17 beds. Gallery.
The large grounds allow
for hunts, overnight stay
in wind shelters and
many activities in the
great outdoors.
– The fortress was built right here on
the road between what was then known as
Christiania, now Oslo, and the part of River
Glomma that crosses the Swedish border.
It is a strategic location and the view from
up here overlooks all points of the compass.
The interesting history of the fortress is
present in everything we do here.
– The historical buildings create the
setting and the staff wear clothes typical
of the period, says Arnt. Every dinner also
includes a compulsory royal toast.
The Norwegian government still owns
the fortress, and Arnt has worked closely
with Nasjonale Festningsverk throughout
the entire renovation process, which was
undertaken to create this unique setting
for a hotel, restaurant, and conference and
meeting facilities. The fortress is one of the
most important monuments of the cultural
heritage in Hedmark.
Kongsvinger Fortress now has 28 suites,
all with a unique design and interior.
– All the materials are of very high
quality and carefully selected. We wanted to
adapt a typical Norwegian style by using a
lot of wood.
A few kilometres from town
you will find Skansgården
Manor beautifully situated
on a hill overlooking Lake
Vingersjøen.
