Länsmansgården,
Sunne
Enjoy yourself while you get a taste of
Selma Lagerlöf’s magical world. Several of
the houses and rooms at Länsmansgården
have been named after Gösta Berling’s
Saga, inviting guests to reminisce about
the characters that appear in the author’s
stories.
The day is slowly fading. The light
breeze of the afternoon quietens down,
leaving Lake Fryken still and crystal clear.
Milly Engvall, Annika Sjöström and
Sophie Mörk Zennström tip-toe out of the
wood-fired sauna below Länsmansgården
and head for the jetty, wearing slippers
and white robes. The early summer air is
pleasantly cool.
Today’s cultural activities have
turned the conversation between the three
newfound friends into a mix of laughter
and more serious topics. Milly and Annika
have travelled to Sunne and Värmland
together. They fill their days with culture.
Sophie has come here with her husband,
artist Petter Zennström, whose exhibition
has just opened at the manor.
For the
good things
in life
This is where you come to relax,

of Värmland and enjoy culinary pleasures.
– We soon discovered that all three of us
are fans of Selma Lagerlöf, says Milly.
Earlier today we visited Mårbacka. Now
we have a lot to talk about.
Länsmansgården, situated a few
kilo-
metres north of central Sunne, welcomed
its first guests almost 90 years ago. Since
1923, travellers along the highway have
slowed down here and headed down the
avenue towards the manor.
Originally it was named Ulfsby Manor
and its history goes way back. The first re-
cords of the manor can be found in the land
register of the 1540s. In the mid-1600s,
Queen Christina annexed the manor and
according to a letter from 1649, it was to
be used as residence for a number of senior
officers. The manor house we visit today
was built in 1850 by royal sheriff Anders
Wahlstrand. The same sheriff was also
the source of inspiration behind Lagerlöf’s
fictional character, sheriff Scharling.
Since spring 2011, the manor has been
owned and run by Marianne Krönsjö.
